Job Summary
The Team
The Justice, Health, and Revenue Group is an established team of around 140 professionals who conduct litigation and provide legal advice to various ministries of the government and certain public agencies. We appear on behalf of the province at all levels of court and carry out work as solicitors for a diverse range of ministries and public agencies including the areas of health, education, children and family, housing, justice services, tax, insolvency, plus regulatory areas including cannabis, vehicles, and gaming. Our diverse team mainly operates out of Victoria working closely together to navigate the fast-paced world of legal challenges. The Role
As Legal Counsel working on coordination agreements involving Indigenous entities, you will provide expert legal advice to ministries regarding provincial and federal child and family statutes and applicable caselaw with a specific focus on assisting with the development of coordination agreements as well as policy, programs, and legislation related to coordination agreements.You’ll work on complex and unique files with a supportive and collaborative team. A significant portion of your work will involve handling confidential and sensitive matters, keeping you at the forefront of legal developments. This position is perfect for someone who has experience working on coordination agreements or similar kinds of complex multi party agreements and is passionate about making a difference through their legal expertise.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Must be a member in good standing or immediately eligible (within 4 months) for membership in the Law Society of British Columbia.
- Legal Counsel Level 3:11th year of call on.
- Recent and significant experience with child and family statutes including specific recent experience with an Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families.
- Recent and significant experience with Indigenous laws.
- Recent and significant experience negotiating agreements with Indigenous peoples.
- Experience in agreement drafting and interpretation.
- Experience in statutory interpretation.
- Experience building strong relationships with clients/partners and team members.
- Experience working independently and in teams.
- Experience managing files with competing priorities to meet deadlines.

About this Position:
This is a 12 month temporary opportunity. This position may be extended or become permanent.
This position is subject to membership in the Professional Employees Association.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home subject to an approved telework agreement.
