Job Summary

The Team
At the Kamloops Zone, you’ll join a collaborative and dedicated team of professionals focused on wildfire prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The team includes seven initial attack crews (28 people), the Bighorn Unit Crew, and office staff, including a Wildfire Officer, Wildfire Technicians, and Operations and Wildfire Assistants. As one of the Initial Attack Supervisors, you will play a key role in leading and supporting the crews during fire suppression, ensuring crew safety, coordinating resources, and implementing effective fire response strategies. You’ll work closely with the Zone and Fire Centre, contributing to the efficient management of wildfire incidents and the recovery process, while fostering ongoing training and development for your team.

The Role
As an Initial Attack Supervisor, your responsibilities will evolve throughout the season. In the spring, your focus will be on onboarding new crew members, providing essential training, and offering ongoing support to ensure they are fully prepared for the demands of the wildfire season. You will play a crucial role in helping them develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the field. During the fire season, your responsibilities will shift to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the initial attack crews, managing crew activities on the fireline, ensuring safety protocols are followed, coordinating resources, and adapting to the dynamic needs of wildfire suppression. Throughout the season, you will maintain close communication with zone members to ensure effective response and recovery efforts. In the fall and winter, you’ll focus on key projects to prepare for the upcoming season, including training, supporting other agencies, recruitment, and strategic planning. You’ll assist with conducting exit interviews and help hire new team members to ensure the crew is ready for the next wildfire season

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Grade 12 plus 4 seasons forest fire related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 2 seasons of supervisory experience; AND
  • Valid OFA Level 1 with Transportation Endorsement; AND
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license; AND
  • Successful completion of pre-employment fitness standard; AND
  • Maintain personal weights standards as required for crew type.

Preference may give given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Incident Commander 4 or higher certification
  • Strike Team Leader
  • Task Force Leader or Task Force Leader trainee certification
  • Qualified Faller Assessor, Qualified Faller Trainer, Certified Faller or Faller in Training or industry equivalent

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To travel and/or drive alone.
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
  • To obtain and maintain certification and training for crew positions to meet operational requirements.
