Job Summary

The Team
The Aquatic Ecosystems Section, part of the West Region Resource Stewardship Operations team in the Strategic Land Use Branch, plays a vital role in preserving freshwater and coastal marine environments. As part of the broader West Region Resource Stewardship Operations, this group collaborates across the natural resource ministries, partners with, First Nations, and coordinates with external partners, to safeguard critical habitats, protect species at risk, and helps develop strategies for land use, forest landscape and water sustainability planning.. The work of the Resource Stewardship Operations team contributes to protecting some of the province’s most endangered ecosystems and advances ecosystem and biodiversity health in partnership with First Nations.

The Aquatic Ecosystems team is relatively new in the region but is already serving an important role in providing professional advice to inform statutory decisions and strategic initiatives across the Coast Area. The team’s work is pivotal in advancing the protection of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems and ensuring the success of the key provincial initiatives like the Cumulative Effects Framework, Coastal Marine Strategy and the Watershed Security Strategy. This is a team driven by passion, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

The Role
The Aquatic Ecosystems Section Head will lead a team of experts dedicated to protecting freshwater and coastal habitats. Your role will guide regional planning efforts, drive collaboration across ministries, and work closely with First Nations and partners to support regulatory decision-making and implement key policies and strategies. You will play a crucial part in fulfilling the Ministry’s mandate to safeguard aquatic ecosystems and recover species at risk, while balancing the needs of diverse stakeholders. This position offers a dynamic mix of leadership, collaboration, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the health of our ecosystems. The Aquatic Ecosystems Section Head is ideal for someone looking to shape a growing team while making meaningful contributions to environmental protection. Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in biological sciences or related field (e.g., natural resource management, wildlife management, species-at-risk conservation, ecology, zoology, hydrology, forestry, etc) AND a minimum of 5 years of related experience, OR
• Master’s Degree or higher in biological sciences or related field (e.g., natural resource management, wildlife management, species-at-risk conservation, ecology, zoology, hydrology, forestry, etc) AND a minimum of 3 years of related experience.
• Registered (or immediately eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
• Note: Eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment.
• Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation and policy.
• Experience supervising, leading, coaching, and mentoring professional staff in resource management.
• Experience negotiating agreements with other levels of government or First Nations.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:

• Experience collaborating and/or consulting with First Nations on natural resource management issues.
• Experience leading, planning, assessing, and managing fish & wildlife populations and their habitats, particularly for species at risk in the coastal areas of B.C.

Provisos

• Valid driver’s license.
• Required to travel.
• Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
• May require the operation of a variety of equipment.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 4 days home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
