Job Summary

The Team
The Natural Resources, Transportation, and Indigenous Legal Group (NATRIL), Transportation and Land Unit within Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Attorney General, is an established team of around 150 professionals.

The Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. The Ministry of Attorney General is structured to carry out this mandate under the direction of the Attorney General, and Legal Services Branch supports the Ministry in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. Legal Services Branch provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. Legal Services Branch’s clients include all Ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.

Within Legal Services Branch, the Transportation and Land Unit is responsible for providing legal advice on all aspects of Crown land administration including Crown land transfers and other dispositions; providing legal advice on provincial transportation and highway matters, including procurements and contracts, transportation projects, land transactions and administrative law matters; and defending the Province from compensation claims made pursuant to the Expropriation Act.

The Role

We are recruiting a skilled and knowledgeable paralegal for a regular, full-time position to support the Transportation and Land Unit’s work, primarily in the area of real property. If you have current experience working as a paralegal in real property matters in a Canadian jurisdiction, we want to hear from you!

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of real property and will be expected to provide exceptional paralegal support to counsel on all aspects of Crown land administration and conveyancing. Duties will include research and analysis of real property status, registered interests and historical land and title documents including Crown Grants; assisting with property conveyances; preparing and reviewing registration documents for survey plans, transfers and charges; and taking primary responsibility for real estate transactions, including electronic registrations and e-meets. Other duties may include providing support to counsel on commercial contract and procurement matters.

A high standard in the delivery of legal support, strong initiative and self-motivation, as well as the ability to work well under pressure are highly valued in this busy work environment. Excellent time management and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize, along with flexibility in responding to shifting work demands are required, including the ability to work overtime when necessary. The successful candidate will also have a keen attention to detail, as well as exceptional proofreading and editing skills. Good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Paralegal Certificate, Diploma or Degree from a recognized institution. Candidates will be required to provide proof of completion of a paralegal certificate/diploma/degree or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a conveyancing paralegal or assistant.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Applicants who have current or recent experience with real property matters, including familiarity with MyLTSA, BC Online, the Land Title Act, and the directives and practice of the Land Title and Survey Authority.
  • Applicants who have experience working with government or other public sector agencies.

This position is based out of Victoria.
