Job Summary

The Team
The Heritage Branch is a branch of 17 dedicated to the recognition, conservation, and celebration of tangible and intangible heritage values across British Columbia. Through managing provincial heritage properties and collections, supporting community-led heritage initiatives, and overseeing fossil management and geographical naming programs, the branch ensures that BC’s diverse heritage is protected and made accessible to the public. With a focus on community engagement, policy development, and stewardship, the Heritage Branch plays a vital role in safeguarding the province’s cultural legacy for future generations.

The Role
As the Senior Heritage Planner, you will be responsible for providing support to the Manager of Heritage Stewardship and Historic Place Operations to meet their work plan responsibilities. In addition, you will participates on a team of historic resource professionals, fulfilling permitting and assessment duties under the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA), managing contracts relating to provincial heritage property site operations and provides senior professional advisory and educational services in historic resource management.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, urban or rural planning, history, heritage conservation, architecture, engineering or equivalent AND a minimum of three (3) years of related experience; OR
  • Masters’ degree in social sciences, urban or rural planning, history, heritage conservation, architecture, engineering or equivalent AND a minimum of two (2) years of related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Related experience must include:

  • Researching, developing, and writing concisely and persuasively a range of documents/content including briefing notes, information articles, reports, position papers, fact sheets, and/or presentations.
  • Evaluating existing policies and/or guidelines and identifying opportunities to solve complex governance, legislation and policy issues, and to adapt best practices to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Establishing, building, and maintaining collaborative working relationships with executive, senior managers, colleagues, and external stakeholders, for the purposes of advising on program, heritage conservation and/or policy issues and recommending solutions for complex challenges and issues.
  • Project management experience applying architectural heritage conservation standards and guidelines.

Preference may be given to applicants who also have experience in one or all of the following:

  • Researching policy or heritage conservation issues, conducting analysis, and developing legislation, regulation, and/or policy.
  • Providing expert advice and recommendations on legislation, policy, best practices and/or cross-ministry programs to senior management, executive, ministers, and other senior leadership officials, including on emerging political or policy issues and risks of major significance.
  • A Master’s Degree in in social sciences, urban or rural planning, history, heritage conservation, architecture, engineering or equivalent.

About this Position:
This is a temporary assignment until 07/31/2026, that may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
