Job Summary

The Team
At the Office of Legislative Counsel within the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Attorney General, you’ll join a dedicated and established team of Legal Counsel and professional staff, including assistants, editors, and analysts. This diverse group works collaboratively to transform complex policy objectives into clear, effective legislation. Our team is known for its expertise and commitment to delivering high-quality legislative solutions while fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment. You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with officials from various government ministries, contributing to impactful legal frameworks that shape public policy.

The Role
As a Legislative Counsel, you’ll play a crucial role in drafting legislation and regulations, advising Cabinet on legislative proposals, and helping ministries achieve their policy goals through clear and effective laws. Your work will involve identifying and resolving legal and legislative issues, advising on parliamentary procedures, and ensuring that legislation is both well-prepared and accurately interpreted. This position offers the chance to impact important public policies and contribute to significant legislative developments that affect the province’s financial, social, and political landscape.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing or immediately eligible for call to the Bar.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience in the following:

  • Drafting legislation or advising on legislative projects.
  • The legislative process, including legal policy development and decision making.
  • The parliamentary procedure and the conduct of government business in the Legislative Assembly.
  • The principles of statutory interpretation and their application by B.C. Courts.
  • Constitutional and administrative law.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.

This position is excluded from union membership.
