Duties:

As a Bus Driver at Vancouver Island University, you will play a crucial role in providing safe and reliable transportation services to our students, staff, and visitors. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely operate the bus and adhere to the BC Motor Vehicle Act, ensuring the well-being of passengers.
  • Provide safe and reliable transportation services to VIU students, staff and the general public, picking up and dropping off students and staff at designated locations on time and on schedule.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip maintenance on vehicles and safety inspection, reporting vehicle defects and problems.
  • Pick up keys from VIU Facilities during office hours before the trip, and ensure they are returned at the end of the shift.
  • Ensure the vehicle is returned with a full tank of gas.
  • Conduct routine pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus to ensure its safety.
  • Report any damage to VIU vehicles or VIU rental vehicles in your care to Facilities Services & Campus Development
  • May be required to assist in loading baggage as needed.
  • Conduct mild maintenance checks, such as checking and topping off fluids, checking tire pressure and filling tires to proper psi.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and exiting the bus, including those with mobility challenges.
  • Keep accurate records of mileage, trips, and other required documentation as per VIU and BC drivers’ legislation in trip inspection booklets.
  • Interact with VIU staff and passengers, providing excellent customer service and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Respond calmly and professionally to any passenger inquiries or concerns.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Valid Class 4 driver’s license and minimum 2 years non-learner experience
  • Clean Driver Abstract
  • Physical capability to perform the job duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility to work on a casual and/or temporary basis.
