Job Summary

The Team
The Prevention and Health Promotion branch works to reduce the incidence of preventable chronic disease and injury by addressing risk factors and supporting health-promoting environments that enable British Columbians to make healthy lifestyle choices. The branch is responsible for population health and wellness strategies related to: healthy eating and food security, physical activity, healthy weights, injury prevention, healthy built environments, aging well, and reduced harms associated with tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis, use as well as gambling. As a key element of an overall strategy to improve population health, the branch supports clinical prevention across the life course. The branch also supports population health promotion strategies in settings, including schools, local communities and in the workplace. To support this work, the branch also incorporates social marketing, and provides governance and procurement oversight over contracts and/or grants with non-government organizations and others.

The position also provides expertise to health authorities on all injury prevention policies and initiatives and is the key liaison with non-governmental and research agencies active in injury prevention. The major focus of injury prevention is the involvement and leadership of the health sector, with a clear recognition of the need to promote inter-sectoral involvement. This includes stimulating inter-sectoral action at the provincial level, across jurisdictions and with the federal government, reporting against health goals and targets, identifying injury trends and opportunities for collaborative action.
