Job Summary

The Team
At the BC Environmental Laboratory, you’ll be joining an existing team of six, including the lab manager, three chemists and two lab support analysts. The main focus of the team is supporting the research interests of academics, industry, and government in the Natural Resource sector. We are a collaborative and dynamic team, with a focus on communication and support to ensure high-quality and timely analyses. The small team size means there are often opportunities to try new tasks and have your unique skills valued.

The Role
As the third Laboratory Support Analyst, your focus will be assisting chemists in the crucial tasks of sample preparation, sample weighing, and routine testing. This role offers the exciting opportunity to apply your analytical chemistry skills to produce data that will guide important decisions for clients. You will also get the chance to explore lab-related activities that may interest you, such as SOP drafting, method development, and instrument operation. This role will be a combination of performing routine tasks and learning new skills which will serve you well here and beyond.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, or Agricultural Science, or Agronomy, or Environmental Chemistry, plus (1) year of related experience in an analytical chemistry production lab environment; OR,
  • Diploma in Chemistry, or Agricultural Science or Agronomy, or Environmental Chemistry, plus two (2) years of related experience in an analytical chemistry production lab environment.

Related experience in an analytical chemistry production lab environment must include all the following:

  • Minimum one (1) year experience with sample preparation, such as: the drying, grinding, milling or sieving of soils and plant tissue.
  • Minimum one(1) year experience working in a laboratory environment following quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) programs, to ensure the reported data produced meets QC/QA criteria outlined in standard operating procedures (SOP).
  • Minimum one (1) year experience using basic support equipment, such as pipettes, balances and water purification systems.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience prioritizing and organizing a complex workload in a busy and constantly changing environment.
  • Minimum one(1) year experience using computers with various instrument software programs and Microsoft Excel to analyze, record, manipulate and report data.
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working in a potentially hazardous chemical laboratory environment, including following safety procedures and applicable health and safety regulations (e.g. WHMIS, TDG and First Aid).

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Experience with analysis preparation, such as: filtration, digestion, extractions, etc. for soils and plant tissue.
  • Experience with the use of instrumentation to conduct sample analysis, such as pH meters, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, ICPOES, ICPMS, autoanalyzer, GCMS, HPLC, etc. (Sample analysis includes the process from weighing samples to generating analysis reports.)
  • Experience with ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
  • Experience writing and revising of SOPs under the supervision of a senior staff member following existing templates and ensuring conformity to published references and methods.
  • Experience preparing verification documentation for instruments and/or support equipment (balances and pipettes).
  • Experience with soil field sampling.

About this Position:
This is a temporary opportunity from December 2, 2024 until December 1, 2026. This opportunity may be extended or become permanent.
This position has full time on-site requirements in Sidney, a small community 26km from Victoria.
