ATG Mechanical Engineer/Engineer-In-Training

TRIUMF

Discover TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre.  We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied.  We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences.  We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF’s diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations.  Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

The Applied Technology Group (ATG) at TRIUMF operates three compact cyclotrons for the production of medical isotopes.  The group consists of 30 operators, engineers, technicians and managers.  We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer/EIT to join our team and work in this exciting environment.

This is an early career engineering position where the incumbent is engaged in relatively complex and non-routine cyclotron systems development projects. The candidate will also be part of the installation, operation and maintenance of the mechanical systems within ATG.

This position assists in the initiation and planning of development projects to improve the reliability and overall performance of the Isotope Production Facility (IPF).

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Carries out a variety of repair and maintenance tasks relating to all aspects of the ATG’s operations
  • Acts as a facility coordinator for all maintenance activities for the IPF
  • Participates in engineering designs from concept to the final stages of implementation
  • Prototyping, assembling, and troubleshooting assemblies
  • Is a resource on the feasibility and practicality of the use of components and devices
  • 3-D Modeling of components and assemblies
  • Performs thermal and stress analysis using various techniques
  • Performs commissioning tests
  • Provides basic input for the operation and continual improvement of cyclotron systems
  • Initiates design changes to equipment as part of continual improvements within established guidelines
  • Writes and maintains technical documentation such as training manuals, assembly instructions, work procedures, and safety analysis reports
  • Implements good document practices
  • Follows all the applicable safety regulations or standards as related to the operational requirements
  • Participating in the TRIUMF project management gate reviews as one of the proponents. The incumbent creates the appropriate documents and acts as a project manager for all work on the IPF

Supervision Exercised:

The incumbent is not expected to provide supervision at any time. He/she may provide technical guidance to others as task supervisor during maintenance activities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • The use of independent thinking, initiative, and sound judgment
  • The application of engineering knowledge in resolving complex design or operational problems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering, material science, and manufacturing, for use in solving problems common to cyclotron systems
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude (the work will require substantial hands-on involvement)
  • Ability to work well under stress and respond well to changing priorities
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and working knowledge of good document practices are necessary
  • The ability to perform detailed heat transfer and structural analysis using various modelling techniques or software such as Ansys, Matlab, Python, Abacus and others is highly desired
  • Fully capable of working efficiently as a team player or independently in order to achieve organizational objectives
  • Project management skills (the work will touch on project management at different times. The ability to generate project documents is required)
  • Engineering experience, such as functional and safety specifications, conceptual design, detailed design, installation, operations and commissioning

Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW):

The position requires the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). This training will be provided by TRIUMF once work begins.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or in a related field
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience after graduation
  • Licensed Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or have the necessary qualifications to apply for licensing as an EIT with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
