Job Summary

The Team
The Food Safety Inspection Branch (FSIB) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food is an established, professional team that successfully keeps the agri-food sector healthy and competitive in British Columbia. This sector includes farming, fishing, aquaculture, and food processing, all of which are important to our economy and public health. The main goal of this team is to protect the public by making sure the agri-food, meat, and seafood produced in the province are safe.

The Role
As a Meat Hygiene & Agri-food Inspector, you inspect provincially licensed abattoirs and carry out both ante-mortem and post-mortem inspections to make sure meat handling follows provincial policies. You will communicate clearly, educate facility operators and staff about regulations, and manage any conflicts that come up. You’ll also help train new meat inspectors, check livestock management practices, ensure animal welfare standards are met, and perform initial food safety inspections of meat processing activities.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
:

  • Training and experience working as a meat inspector in a slaughter establishment OR
  • Secondary School graduation (or equivalent) with training and experience in meat processing OR
  • A Diploma in animal science, veterinary technician, food science, or meat processing.

Preference Statement: Preference may be given to candidates with previous meat inspection experience.

This is a part-time, “if and as when needed” opportunity with no minimum guaranteed hours until March 31, 2025. This temporary opportunity may be extended or become permanent.
This position has full time on-site requirements.

Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.

  • Must be able to work in a physically demanding environment, including working with repetitive motions.

  • A valid driver’s license with no restrictions. May be required to use own vehicle on an expense paid basis. Overnight travel may be required.
