Job Summary

The Team:
At the Compliance Division, the Gaming, Policy & Enforcement Branch is home to our dynamic team of Inspectors. This established group, consisting of 4 Inspectors and 1 Manager, is known for its diverse skill set in enforcement and compliance, with a strong emphasis on conflict resolution and creative problem-solving. We value the unique perspectives each member brings, contributing to a collaborative environment that plays a crucial role in maintaining fairness in horse racing across B.C.

The Role:
In this role, you’ll be responsible for enforcing the rules set out by the Gaming Control Act, conducting breathalyzer and drug tests, and performing inspections of barns and vehicles. Your work directly impacts the public by ensuring that horse racing remains fair and well-regulated, giving people confidence in the integrity of the sport. This position offers the chance to gain valuable experience applicable to many other public service roles in B.C., and with a four-day work week, a positive team environment, and plenty of outdoor activity, it’s an exciting opportunity for anyone looking to make a difference.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Diploma in a related discipline such as administrative law, investigation and enforcement, or criminology OR
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent (GED) and certification or equivalent in a related discipline such as administrative law, investigation and enforcement, or criminology.
  • Related experience in a compliance and enforcement environment planning and conducting inspections, interviews, and investigations.

Related experience includes a combination of the following:

  • Audit, education, risk, legal, investigations, ethics, policy development

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Related experience working in a federal, provincial or municipal governmental regulatory environment.

Proviso:

  • Valid Class BC class 5 driver’s license or an equivalent class driver’s license from another province or jurisdiction.

Willingness statement(s):

  • Will be required to work weekends, early mornings, evenings and/or statutory holidays. I.e., shifts that could start as early as 5:00 am or end as late as 10:15 pm.
  • Will be required to work outside, including during periods of inclement weather.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the province. May be required to travel alone, late at night in remote areas of the province, under a variety of road/weather conditions, often without cellular contact. This may involve absences of several days when inspections involve working in outlying areas.
  • Must be comfortable working with human saliva and breathalyzers for administrating drug testing is a regular duty of this position
  • Willingness to work various shifts that could start as early as 5 am or end as late as 10:15 pm.
  • Willingness to use personal vehicle, with appropriate insurance, on an expense account basis may be required.
  • Willingness to travel between the two locations (Fraser Downs in Surrey and Hasting Racecourse in Vancouver).
  • Willingness to attend office location in Burnaby to pick up materials and mail.
  • Willingness to work in a rural setting near horses
