Job Summary

The Team
The Molecular Diagnostics Section at the Plant and Animal Health Centre is a dedicated team of five experts who play a crucial role in protecting the health of agriculture, aquaculture, wildlife, and companion animals. This team closely collaborates with other laboratory sections of the Animal Health Centre to provide routine molecular-based diagnostic testing, with a special emphasis on outbreak response and foreign animal disease testing. Additionally, the Molecular Diagnostics Section works closely with universities, CFIA, CDC, and other ministries on various research initiatives and projects. Their work not only ensures the well-being of animals but also contributes significantly to the welfare and economy of British Columbia. The team’s success is rooted in their commitment to proficiency, collaboration, and a shared dedication to their mission.

The Role
As a Laboratory Scientist in Molecular Diagnostics, you’ll be responsible for detecting, identifying, and classifying a wide range of viruses, bacteria, and protozoa from various animal species using advanced molecular diagnostic procedures. Your work will have a direct impact on monitoring zoonotic and foreign animal diseases, contributing to the health and well-being of both animals and humans. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology or a related field.
  • Two years’ experience in a molecular biology laboratory.
  • Experience or training in diagnostic molecular biology.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including, various PCR methods, nucleic acid hybridization, cloning and DNA sequencing and analysis.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of a variety of laboratory equipment.

Preference May Be Given to Applicants with a Combination of The Following Experiences:

  • Experience working with viral, bacterial and parasitic agents pathogenic to animals and humans.
  • One or more years of experience in the next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience in an accredited laboratory (ISO 17025 or AAVLD) or experience with a similar quality management system is preferred.

Provisos/Willingness Statements:

  • Meets safety standards of Work Safe BC including WHMIS.
  • Must be willing to participate in the PAHB rabies vaccination and surveillance program.
  • Willingness to be trained on Transportation of Dangerous Goods and work in a Containment Level 3 (CL3) Laboratory.
  • Willingness to be trained to conduct foreign animal disease and BSE testing through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
  • Willingness to be cross-trained in various sections of the AHC based on the needs of the PAHB.
  • Valid B.C. driver’s licence.
