Overview
Are you a physician interested in playing a leadership role to prevent workplace injury and disease in British Columbia? We have an exciting opportunity for a Medical Advisor to join our strong team in the Medical Services department.
You’ll partner with adjudicative staff, occupational safety and hygiene officers, and community physicians to help injured workers in their recovery, rehabilitation, and safe return to work. You’ll primarily play a medico-legal role sharing your opinions and recommendations about workers’ medical conditions, causes, and treatments. You’ll apply academic and clinical knowledge and experience to help injured workers recover and return to work.

Where you’ll work
At WorkSafeBC, we currently offer a hybrid work model that combines the convenience of working remotely with the dynamism of working in one of our offices, based on the operation needs of the position.
This role includes opportunities to work from home along with scheduled days in your assigned office. Let us know in your cover letter which of the following locations you’d like to designate as your local office: Abbotsford, Burnaby, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nelson, Prince George, Terrace, Victoria, Nanaimo, or Courtenay.
We offer a flexible Monday to Friday work week with a full- or part-time schedule (a minimum of two and half days per week).
What you’ll do
- Evaluate medical impairments and disabilities through review of electronic records and share your opinions about cause, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis by way of written opinions or discussion in team meetings
- Provide evidence-based medical recommendations to adjudicating officers making claim entitlement decisions
- Collaborate with community physicians to ensure workers’ rehabilitations and medical-management needs are being met
- Work in a case-management team environment with both medical and non-medical colleagues, providing opinions and recommendations

Your background and experience:
- Eligible for full licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
- A minimum of five years of experience in clinical practice including family medicine, sports medicine, or emergency medicine and an an interest in rehabilitation, mental health, or occupational medicine
- An interest in occupational health and safety and disability management concepts, including return-to-work planning
- Willing to work in a team-based environment
- Excellent communication skills
Important to know
Before we can finalize any offer of employment, you must:
- Successfully meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Review Act to work with children and/or vulnerable adults
- Confirm you’re legally entitled to work in Canada and eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.

Salary:
Includes 1.03% cost of living increase, effective April 1, 2024:
Medical Advisor I – $102.05 hourly / $199,008.19 annually
Medical Advisor II – $106.57 hourly / $207,830.57 annually
Note: Royal College Specialists are welcome to apply, however, please note that compensation for the Medical Advisor position is at the Medical Advisor II rate.
