Job Summary

The Team
The Fish and Wildlife Information Services Section is an established, diverse team of natural resource sector professionals and technical specialists dedicated to managing biological datasets. The team is structured into four specialized units: wildlife data management, fish and aquatics data management, systems and application support, and regional data services. Collaborating closely with regional teams, biologists, First Nation partners, and external clients, the Fish and Wildlife Information Services Section provides access to provincial-scale fish and wildlife data and information for both internal and external clients. The Role
As a Fish & Wildlife Information Biologist, you will collaborate with regional teams and biologists to manage fish and wildlife datasets, provide training on provincial fish and wildlife systems and data policies and procedures, and ensure data accessibility through provincial-scale systems. By supporting the availability of species information, your work will help inform science-based land management decisions for our citizens and clients, and foster collaborative relationships with partners. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Registered, or immediately eligible to register, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with the BC College of Applied Biologists (CAB). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
• Master of Science degree or higher in biological sciences or natural resource conservation/management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity AND one (1) year of related experience, including working in a complex natural resource management area; OR,
• Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences or natural resource conservation/management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity AND three (3) years of related experience, including working in a complex natural resource management area; OR,
• Technical diploma in a biological sciences or natural resource conservation/management, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, conservation biology, fish or wildlife management and biodiversity AND five (5) years of related experience, including working in a complex natural resource management area; OR,
• Other relevant combinations of education, related experience and/or training may be considered that meets the criteria for registration as a Professional Biologist.

Related experience must include but is not limited to the following:

• Experience in fish, wildlife and ecosystems inventory for the purposes of documenting distribution and quantifying abundance.
• Experience in the management of complex digital fish, wildlife and ecosystems information and the use of analytical tools, including GIS for portraying and interpreting the information.
• Experience in the application of fish, wildlife and ecosystem related information in land use or management initiatives.
• Considerable demonstrated experience in dealing with public and private sector officials, professionals, contractors, and interest groups with conflicting interests and expectations.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:

• Experience in mapping habitats in meaningful units for various fish, wildlife and ecosystems species, and in interpreting their relative quality for use by various species.
• Experience programming and scripting (e.g. R, SAS, SQL, Python, and/or related systems and languages) for the purposes of data management, statistical analysis, data visualization, and scientific communication.
• Experience in client support, end-user training, extension and outreach.
• Experience interpreting and applying natural resource management legislation and policy.

About this Position:
There is one permanent position available. This position can be based out of either of the location(s) listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work 2 or more days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
