Job Summary

The Team
The Southeast Fire Centre Prevention team is part of the BC Wildfire Service, focused on wildfire resiliency, education, mitigation, and response. This established team, consisting of a Senior Wildfire Officer, 2 Wildfire Prevention Officers, a Prevention Specialist, and a Prevention Clerk, works closely with various staff and partners to manage significant wildfire risk reduction and prescribed fire initiatives. The Role
The Prevention Specialist will lead key projects within the Fire Centre, support Senior Wildfire Officers in applying legislation, and play a crucial part in wildfire prevention in the Southeast Fire Centre. You’ll be responsible for the fire center FireSmart program, work with regional FireSmart coordinators, review prevention project funding requests from municipal and first nations partners, refine and update prevention plans, and implement strategies to reduce human-caused fires. As a wildfire expert, you’ll build strong partnerships to enhance risk reduction efforts, offering a unique opportunity to shape provincial policies and protect community safety.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirement

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management, plus one (1) year recent related experience; OR,
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, plus three (3) years recent related experience;OR,
  • Grade 12 plus five (5) years recent related experience ; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered; AND,
  • Valid class 5 driver license.

Related experience is defined as operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • Registered or immediately eligible to register as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Forest Professionals BC.
  • Experience in fuel management
  • Experience in fuel management
  • Expereince in fire behaviour
  • Experience in prescribed fire
  • Experience in Wildland fire management.

  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.

  • To be assigned or participate to Incident Command System positions and Incident Management Teams as required.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
