About the Opportunity

Wuikinuxv Nation is looking for a full-time Governance Director. Please note that we are a remote community in the Central Coast region of B.C., accessible by boat or plane from Port Hardy. The successful candidate will be required to be on-site for a minimum of 1 week per month. 

The Wuikinuxv Nation Governance Director is a strategic leader responsible for overseeing governance processes, negotiations with external agencies, and managing political advocacy. This role involves developing internal governance frameworks, supporting policies, and maintaining effective collaboration across departments and with external partners. The Governance Director ensures organizational efficiency in managing projects and advancing the interests of the Wuikinuxv Nation.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Negotiating and supporting agreements related to reconciliation and governance with external agencies and government bodies
• Facilitating discussions with external stakeholders to advance the Nation’s interests
• Developing and supporting internal governance documents, including constitutions and election codes
• Collaborating with internal departments to ensure policies align with governance objectives
• Providing guidance on the development and implementation of policies and procedures
• Managing an accountability matrix and liaising with hereditary leaders and key stakeholders
• Overseeing budgeting, work planning, and staff management for governance activities
• Managing the budget, developing strategic financial plans, and identifying opportunities for government funding
• Coordinating virtual meetings and managing communication through various platforms
• Maintaining strong relationships with government contacts to support political advocacy
• Setting up and managing meetings for effective decision-making and negotiations
• Spending significant time within the community to maintain relationships and stay informed about local culture
• Ensuring transparent communication with community members about ongoing work and strategies

About You

To qualify, you will need a Master’s degree in Indigenous Governance, Political Science, First Nations Studies, or a related field, and a minimum of 10 years of experience in a governance role within Indigenous Nations or an equivalent position, and a valid driver’s license. 

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

• Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal Title and Rights, including recent court cases and precedents
• Knowledge of federal and provincial systems, or the ability to quickly learn
• Understanding of both treaty and reconciliation processes
• Proficiency in virtual meeting software, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Dropbox
• Mediation or negotiation training

You will have a proven ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners, especially within government, to bridge gaps and foster collaboration. Your diplomatic communication skills will help you navigate complex negotiations regarding self-governance and reconciliation processes.
