Job Summary

The Team
The Land Use Planning and Cumulative Effects – South, Ecosystems Team is a collaborative group dedicated to conserving and restoring ecosystems across the region. With expertise spanning biology, ecology, and environmental science, the team works together to make a lasting impact on species recovery and habitat protection.

The Role
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful conservation initiatives focused on ecosystem health and species at risk recovery. The Ecosystems Biologist will play a key role in leading and supporting projects that ensure sustainable land use and biodiversity management across diverse landscapes.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences, plus three (3) years related experience; OR
• Master of Science or higher in biological sciences, plus one (1) year of related experience; AND
• Registered, or immediately eligible, as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology (CAB). Note: Immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the CAB within six (6) months of employment.
Related experience includes a combination of ALL of the following:
• Recent (within 5 years) and direct experience applying stewardship approaches and recovery initiatives (recovery action implementation, habitat management etc) for provincial and/or federal species-at-risk
• Experience in providing science and technical advice to managers mediating solutions and making decisions in natural resource management within and/or outside government.
• Experience in planning and coordinating ecosystem stewardship activities (e.g. inventories/surveys, monitoring, wildlife habitat assessments, sampling design, and scientific reporting).

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
• Experience building and maintaining relationships with First Nations and/or partners and stakeholders (e.g. environmental regulatory agencies, government and non-government agencies, public and private resource development agencies).
• Experience interpreting natural resource management legislation and policies in order to make recommendations.
• Experience in project management including project/study design, preparing funding applications, contract management, budget management, and reporting.
• Experience in GIS applications
• Experience in operational forestry and/or range management activities
• Experience with habitat protection measures under BC’s Forest and Range Practices Act

Willingness Statements:
• Valid B.C. driver’s licence.
• Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
• May require the operation of a variety of equipment.
• Conducts field work which may include the following: travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Ability to carry equipment and supplies in difficult terrain.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to a few days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
This position can be located in Cranbrook or Nelson, BC; other Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship office locations in the Kootenay Boundary Region may be considered, subject to Ministry operational requirements at time of offer.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
