Job Summary

The Team
The Indigenous Guardianship & Permanency team is committed to ensuring excellent service for Indigenous children, youth, and their families. This dedicated team consists of a Team Lead, four other Guardianship Workers, a Roots Practitioner and a Team Assistant all focused on supporting children and youth up to 15 years of age who are in the continuing custody of the Director. You’ll have the opportunity to work alongside Resource Workers, Roots Practitioners, Elders, and members from Indigenous communities across Canada, developing permanency plans that connect children and youth to their family, culture, and community. This team collaborates with various Ministry teams, schools, medical and allied professionals, and local agencies, creating a supportive network for families. Together, they develop trauma informed and culturally appropriate permanency plans that have a positive impact on the children and youth they serve. We’re thrilled to announce that in 2025, we’ll be relocating to a new office in Burnaby near Metrotown, which will help us better serve the community.

The Role
As a Guardianship Worker, you will serve as the legal guardian for children in care, taking on the vital responsibility of ensuring their physical and mental health, as well as their spiritual well-being. You’ll connect these children with their family, community, and culture, helping to shape their upbringing during a crucial time in their lives. The Guardianship Worker has the privilege of working closely with children and youth, witnessing their growth and making impactful decisions that prioritize their best interests. This position also involves travel between Burnaby, New Westminster, Tri-Cities (Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody), and Maple Ridge. There will also be the potential to travel to communities across Canada to connect children and youth to their family and culture.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

1. Preferred Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Social Work or in Child & Youth Care OR Master’s Degree in Educational Counselling Psychology/Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology with completion of a practicum in family and child welfare OR
  • In-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who have a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA) OR
  • A candidate may be considered equivalent when they are registered and a member in good standing with the BC College of Social Workers or has a letter from the College confirming that their application for registration has been approved.
    • NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services ( ICES ). You must provide a comprehensive report and the MCFD supplemental report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

2. Expanded Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field OR Bachelor’s Degree witha Major/Honors in a Human Services field OR Master’s level graduate Certificate/Diploma in a Human Services field AFTER the completion of an unrelated Bachelor’s Degree.
  • PLUS, a minimum of one year of related OR job-specific work experience.
  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
    • NOTE: If this education was obtained outside of Canada, you need to confirm it has been assessed for equivalency through the International Credential Evaluation Services ( ICES ). You must provide a basic report by the closing date of this posting to be considered.

Human Services fields include: Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Education, Theology or Nursing.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Preferred education credentials AND/OR in-service Ministry of Children and Family Development employees who hold a regular SPO 24-30 base position that requires delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Two years or more of work experience in child protection and/or guardianship roles.
  • Experience working with Indigenous children, youth, families and communities (First Nations, Métis and/or Inuit).
  • Work experience through completion of a practicum in family and child welfare and completion of the Child Protection Worker Pre-Employment Program.
  • Experience with Ministry tools such as ICM (Integrated Case Management), MIS (Ministry Information System) and/or AMS (Adoption Management System).
  • Hold or be immediately eligible for C4 delegation under the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA).
  • Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or equivalent (i.e. from another Canadian Province).

About this Position:
There is one regular full time vacancy available that is based in New Westminster and provides service to Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Regular travel between these communities is required.
This position and team will be moving to Burnaby in 2025.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
