Job Summary

The Team

The Indigenous Consultation and Negotiation team is a dedicated group of five professionals who play a pivotal role in bridging provincial goals and First Nations interests. With a mix of two senior Indigenous relations advisors, a First Nation consultant, a coordinator, and a manager, this team is focused on developing consistent consultation processes and innovative policies that address the unique challenges of their work. Although the team has been in operation for some time, it is now under new leadership, bringing fresh perspectives to their established practices. Their expertise is vital in navigating the complexities of financial, legal, and political considerations while fostering strong relationships with First Nations regarding cultural heritage and archaeology.

The Role

At the helm of this team is the manager of consultation and negotiations, who is responsible for translating broad initiatives into actionable processes and managing potential fallout from various strategies. This role requires exceptional negotiation skills and the ability to influence diverse stakeholders to reach consensus. The manager also collaborates with other branch management members, contributing to decision-making that shapes ministry operations. Engaging with First Nations, the public, and industry forums at various levels, the manager ensures that consultation processes align with treaty and reconciliation efforts, furthering the ministry’s objectives and enhancing relationships with key partners. This team’s commitment and knowledge are essential in driving innovation and fostering a respectful dialogue around the cultural heritage of B.C.

Qualifications

Education

• A Masters’ degree in a field related to Law, Project Management, Natural Resources, Cultural Resource Management, Business/Public Administration or an equivalent field, OR
• An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.

Experience
• Minimum of 3 years of experience dealing with politically sensitive and provincially significant issues and with developing policy, procedures and corporate practices.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience with Indigenous history, culture, and constitutional law that influences First Nations Relations.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a management capacity including strategic and operational business and organizational planning and financial management.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience leading and coaching diverse teams.
• Experience in problem solving and facilitating/implementing/working with change management practices.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in project management with rigid deadlines.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following:
• Applicants who identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit)
• Experience working with Indigenous communities in British Columbia.
