Job Summary

The Team
The Environmental Data Management unit at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is an experienced group committed to accurately collecting, storing, and reporting on continuous and discrete environmental data collected by ministry staff, partner agencies, and industry. The team consists of five scientific and technical officers, a reporting officer, and a unit head. We develop solutions that provide near real time data on air quality, groundwater level, snowpack, and river flow and non-real time data on chemical and physical analysis of water, soil, air, and biological samples. We work closely with clients across the ministry and beyond to provide meaningful reporting products and meet their data acquisition and storage needs.

The Role
As a Geomatics and Data Science Specialist, you will provide critical support to the unit’s database managers and the branch’s GIS and geomatics needs. In collaboration with the senior data science specialist and environmental science professionals you will assist in data migrations to new systems, data analysis to identify data quality challenges, reporting through powerful data visualization and statistics. The work will be dynamic, technology focused, and driven by operational needs, offering opportunities for professional growth.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, geography, geomatics, or computer science or equivalent education and two (2) years of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience, education and/or training may be considered.

Related Experience must include all of the following:

  • Experience developing and managing large spatial and non-spatial data sets, including performing extractions, transformation, and loading of data set into and out of various systems.
  • Experience using computer programming or scripting languages (such as, R, Python, SQL etc.) for the synthesis, assembly, management, or analysis of scientific and geospatial data or information.
  • Experience with GIS software, including ArcPro, QGIS, and ArcGIS Online to produce high quality maps, web maps, dashboards and visualizations.

Preference may be given to applicants with the following

  • Experience developing R Shiny or similar applications.
  • Experience using GitHub or equivalent to manage projects.
  • Experience working in an OpenShift environment.
  • Experience conducting water quality sampling or laboratory analysis.
  • Experience working with hydrometric data and field equipment.

About this Position:
This position can be based in any Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy office.
Remote work is allowed, this position can work up to full time from their home in British Columbia subject to an approved telework agreement. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
