MBA Work Integrated Learning Coach

Join VIU in the temporary full-time role of MBA Work Integrated Learning Coach a vital role within the Graduate Programs Office.

This position is part of the MBA Internship Team within the Graduate Programs Office (GPO) at Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) Faculty of Management (FOM). The MBA Internship Team consists of professionals with expertise related to experiential education, career development and employment. The team provides academic instruction and co-curricular programming intended to both prepare MBA students for an internship semester and for future success in achieving their career goals.

The focus of this position is to coach and support students to successfully identify, attain and complete internships as part of our MBA program (90% International students).

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with members of the MBA Internship Team and the GPO to:

Develop and evaluate WIL opportunities:

  • Engage in development and implementation of department planned activities and existing community events.
  • Develop and support student-employer connections.
  • Identify relevant WIL opportunities for students that provide for the attainment of program learning outcomes.
  • Assess the suitability of WIL sites to ensure they conform to relevant legislation and professional codes of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Coach and advise students in one-to-one, small group and classroom environments.

Support and monitor WIL opportunities:

  • Provide support to students and employers in the fulfillment of internships.
  • Mediate between students and employers when necessary, aiding in the assessment and resolution of difficulties (i.e., performance, harassment, etc.).

Other:

  • Develop and maintain a professional network of potential employers.
  • Participate in the maintenance and improvement of processes, materials and administrative practices.
  • Represent the Faculty of Management to external groups. participating in trade shows, and professional bodies aligned with program responsibility.
  • Establish high functioning collaborative relationships with faculty and departments.
  • Attend relevant meetings associated with the MBA program and/or the Faculty of Management.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

This position involves some travel.

Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities, including, student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a field related to Business, Social Science or Education from an appropriately accredited institution. A combination of a Bachelor’s degree and practical experience in the field may be considered.

  • Experience in the area of career education, coaching and development, or employment services.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning.
  • Understanding of labour market analysis, knowledge of employability and transferable skills.
  • Proven aptitude for liaising with employers and community service agencies to develop experiential learning opportunities for students.
  • Aptitude for working in intercultural environments with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Understanding of the unique needs and challenges of international students, coming to Canada from a range of countries, in relation to career engagement and development locally and the interaction between students and employers.
  • Ability to work with Indigenous populations. Understanding of and practical ability to recognize Indigenous ways of knowing and learning.
  • Ability to write clearly and communicate ideas in a variety of ways.
  • Excellent interpersonal, relationship management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Capacity to creatively solve problems.
  • Relevant computer applications including office productivity software, database management, website management, relevant social media.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and have a confirmed satisfactory driving record.
