Job Summary

CONTEXT
Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) is a dynamic, progressive and innovative organization that supports external communication of government in its ongoing dialogue with people in BC. GCPE leads and coordinates government communications through its three divisions: Communications Operations, Strategic Communications, and Corporate Priorities.

The Role
The Communications Director provides oversight and strategic direction to communications staff, including prioritization, issues management, media relations, and a variety of communications products that inform the public and media of key services and priorities for a medium to large ministry.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related field such as journalism, public relations, political science, writing, English, marketing or a communications-related discipline and 5 years or more related work experience in progressively more responsible communications positions.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Related work experience is defined as a combination of all of the following:

  • Experience in media relations and public communications.
  • Experience in communications strategy planning, development and implementation.
  • Experience in professional writing/communications product development, (e.g.: engagement and communication plans, news releases, backgrounders; publications content; speech writing; etc.).
  • Experience in issues management and crisis communications.
  • Experience leading teams and resolving complex staff issues.

Preference may be given to those with:

  • Experience in having direct responsibility for developing and coordinating internal/external communications and engagement functions of a complex corporate or public sector organization.
  • Experience developing and maintaining working relationships and resolving problems with a variety of internal and external partners.

About this Position:
This posting is to establish a pre-qualified pool of applicants who will be eligible to be appointed to full-time, permanent and temporary positions in GCPE offices for all provincial government ministries. This pool has been designed so applicants can be considered for multiple Communications Director opportunities across the Government Communication and Public Engagement organization.
This position will be based in one of the GCPE offices in Victoria. Telework options may be available upon successful completion of a probationary period.
The starting salary for this position is $105,900.12-$114,625 and will be determined by the successful candidate’s relevant education and experience.
Applicants who are successful in the competition will be placed into the pre-qualified pool and appointments will be made based on the requirements of the hiring ministry.
This position is excluded from union membership.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
