POSITION SUMMARY
Employees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Assembly) provide professional non-partisan services to support the democratic institution of Parliament and its members through procedural advice, administrative support and information services. The Assembly is an autonomous employer, separate from the administrative framework of B.C. government ministries and agencies.
The Legislative Library is seeking a diligent, service oriented, and collaborative individual for the auxiliary, full-time position of Librarian.
Reporting to the Reference Services Manager, the Librarian supports the information and research needs of Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), caucus staff, Assembly staff, statutory offices, provincial government researchers and members of the public. The Librarian designs, develops and delivers library products, collections and services, and provides advice in the areas of reference, technical services and systems.
The Librarian will work as part of a team of dedicated professionals to provide in-depth reference and information services to Members of the Legislative Assembly, their staff, and other library patrons. The Librarian in this position will also take the lead in developing and coordinating the library’s current awareness services. They will examine the needs of library clients and design current awareness products, construct intricate Boolean searches to generate customized media scans, work with a team to ensure media products are delivered in a timely manner to clients on a daily or weekly schedule, and liaise with the vendor to troubleshoot and maintain quality assurance. In addition, the Librarian will participate in outreach activities including conducting occasional library tours and orientation sessions.
To be successful in this role, the Librarian must demonstrate initiative, have excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, be able to deliver high-quality information service under tight deadlines and Ibe proficient in database searching.
Preference may be given to candidates with any of the following: experience with reference and research services in an academic or government library, and/or experience working with legislation and government information.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have:
- Masters of Library Science or an equivalent program from an American Library Association-accredited institution, or equivalent international degree.
