Under supervision of the Section Head, performs the routine technical work of the Cytogenetics Laboratory.

What you’ll do

• Sets up cultures of blood, marrow and amniotic fluid according to established procedures.
• Harvests cultures, prepares and stains slides for microscopic analysis, including special stains and banding procedures.
• Analyzes chromosomes under microscope and photographs representative metaphase figures.
• Prepares karyotypes from photographs for examination by Cytogeneticist.
• Makes routine entries in log books for accessioning and quality control according to written protocols.
• Assists section Head in providing bench work instruction and orientation.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) Certified.
• Demonstrated technical competence.
• Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

• As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).

Provincial Laboratory Medicine Services (PLMS) provides laboratory testing at 31 sites across the lower mainland and central coast of BC, including acute care hospital laboratories and specialty laboratories.
