Job Summary

The Team:
The Prince George District Engineering team is a small group of three forest professionals who are skilled, outdoors-oriented, and solution-driven. By working closely with a range of partners and stakeholders, including other District programs, Engineers, and industry consultants, they play a critical role in ensuring public safety, reducing environmental risks, and managing the District’s Forest Service Road network in a fiscally responsible manner.

The Role:
As an Engineering Specialist, you will provide essential technical field support for program, project, and contract management, including overseeing project budgets and managing aspects of the road maintenance plan. Your efforts will help maintain access to rural residences and high-value recreation sites, ensuring public safety and environmental protection while supporting a safe road network for the forest industry. This role offers a flexible schedule, an excellent team environment, and the opportunity to tackle new challenges, with regular chances to work in the field and collaborate with industry licensees, consultants, First Nations, and government partners.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Must be a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT), or related designation, with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC), or able to transfer a current RFT (or related) membership to FPBC within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Certificate or coursework in a natural resources field, civil engineering, or a related field (i.e., chemical, metallurgical, forest engineering, survey geomatics, geoscience) and four (4) years of related experience; OR,
  • Diploma in a natural resources field, civil engineering, or a related field (i.e., chemical, metallurgical, forest engineering, survey geomatics, geoscience) and three (3) years of related experience; OR,
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resources field, civil engineering, or a related field (i.e., chemical, metallurgical, forest engineering, survey geomatics, geoscience) and two (2) years of related experience; OR,
  • Master’s Degree (or higher) in a natural resources field, civil engineering, or a related field (i.e., chemical, metallurgical, forest engineering, survey geomatics, geoscience) and one (1) year of related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Related experience must include a minimum of six (6) months in each of the following:

  • resource road layout, survey and design; and,
  • contract and/or project supervision.

Related experience may also include any of the following:

  • resource road and bridge inspection, maintenance, administration;
  • harvesting operations supervision;
  • harvesting planning;
  • applying standards, policy and/or legislation; and/or,
  • providing guidance and advice to internal and external partners and stakeholders.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:

  • two (2) or more years of experience in road layout, survey, and design;
  • one (1) or more years of experience with ArcGIS or equivalent software;
  • experience in stream assessments;
  • experience supervising or leading others;
  • experience in bridge assessments; and/or,
  • experience in budget management.

Provisos:

  • Willing and able to meet the safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
  • Willing and able to conduct field work in all weather conditions and environments, which may include travel to remote areas by aircraft, vehicle, ATV, snowmobile, or on foot in difficult terrain.
  • Willing and able to be certified in Level 1 First Aid, which is a requirement for field work.
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment (ATVs, snowmobiles, chainsaws, hand tools, etc.).

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Prince George.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Prince George.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
