Job Summary

The Team
The Production Insurance team at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food is a supportive, experienced group of people based in the southern interior. We work together to help farmers by managing the Production Insurance Program, with team members handling both underwriting and claims. Our team values diversity and works closely with other staff in the Business Risk Management Branch to improve farming practices and explore new ideas that benefit agriculture.

The Role
As a Crop Risk Specialist, you will provide expert advice on managing crop production risks, especially for tree fruit and grapes. You’ll guide others in underwriting decisions and ensure that Production Insurance and other programs meet high scientific standards. Your work helps farmers protect their operations from financial loss due to weather and market conditions, contributing to a sustainable future for agriculture. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
  • 5 years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and production parameters for commodities common to B.C.; OR
  • Master’s degree in Agriculture, Business or Economics; AND
  • 3 years’ experience in agriculture industry analysis with a focus on financial and production parameters for commodities common to B.C. OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the discipline of agronomy or related to primary agriculture production.
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising staff (including performance management, direction of work, coaching etc.); OR
  • Four (4) years of experience delivering agriculture risk management programs or delivering agriculture projects of moderate to high complexity, with multiple deliverables and with various and divergent stakeholder interests.

Preference May be given to Applicants with any of the following:

  • 4 (or more) years’ experience in the discipline of Agronomy or related primary agriculture production.
  • Direct management experience in the Tree Fruit/Grape Industry.
  • Experience Delivering Agriculture Risk Management Programs.

PROVISIOS

  • A valid driver’s licence is required.
  • Field work is part of this role which may include travel to remote areas, overnight or extended stays and outdoor work in all weather conditions with the potential for wildlife overlap.
