Job Summary

The Team
The HQ Communications team is responsible for provincial external communications and engagement in all four pillars of emergency management, as well as internal communications within the BC Wildfire Service. The HQ Communication team directly supports communication teams within the six regional fire centres, as well as all program areas within the BC Wildfire Service.

The Role
The Team Lead, Communications provides operational leadership for provincial communications including supporting communications officers and seasonal communications assistants with advice, guidance and interpretation of policy and procedures. This position is responsible for the development, planning and delivery of internal and external communications and public relations programs for the branch with a focus on day-to-day operations.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in Communications, Public Relations or a similar program and 3 years of related experience; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered

Related experience is defined as:

  • Experience in public relations, corporate communications or media relations in a large organization
  • Experience working with partners in translating business needs into practical service delivery solutions
  • Experience working in customer service delivery programs and working directly with a diverse range of clients and community partners

Preference statement(s)

  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience, preferably in a union setting
  • Emergency response experience

Provisos /Willingness statement(s)

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures
  • To keep current on emerging issues
  • To take in-house training and certification as required
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required
  • To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions
  • Valid Class 5 (or equivalent) BC Driver’s Licence

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
