A primary function of the ministry is to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods, services and people.

The Provincial Weather Network Program provides critical weather sensor data to Ministry staff as well as the Maintenance Contractor and the public.

Provincial Weather Network Program staff work closely with other Ministry representatives, the Maintenance Contractors and key stakeholders throughout the year to provide high reliability weather and road condition data, and to identify areas where specific sensors or weather stations are required to enhance public safety. The program is 24 hours per day, 7 days per week as required. To ensure high reliability, Provincial Weather Network Program staff may be required to work extended shifts, to be on call or to work on scheduled days off.

The Senior Environmental Electronics Technologist will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and rehabilitation of an integrated Regional Remote Weather and Environmental Sensing Network within the Province. The position determines local and provincial needs, configures specialized software and equipment, and installs, maintains and repairs remote electronic stations to support the safety and integrity of the Ministry’s highway system. The position requires the individual to be technically proficient, self-learning and have excellent communication skills. Senior Environmental Electronics Technologists supervise one Assistant Environmental Electronics Technician on a full-time basis. The position also requires project supervision, inspection and reporting the work of contracted resources, periodically supervising up to 5 staff.

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma or higher in Electronic Engineering Technologies or related electronics field and minimum of 2 years related experience; OR
  • Certificate or coursework in Electronic Engineering Technologies or related electronics field and minimum of 3 years of related experience
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

RELATED EXPERIENCE INCLUDES:

  • Experience working with the following:
    • Industry grade electronics and control systems
    • Electronics instrumentation related to weather networks
    • Roadside Weather Stations (RWS) and/or Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS)
  • Experience in electronics instrumentation within a Weather Network or similar program
  • Experience working in a comparable or similar capacity, outdoors, in an alpine environment, in adverse weather conditions
  • 1 year or more of experience programming in CRBasic and a fundamental understanding of similar coding languages

Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

  • Experience with environmental data acquisition – its collection, analysis, and application
  • Experience with Vaisala and/or Campbell Scientific dataloggers and sensors
  • Canadian Avalanche Association Resource Transportation Avalanche Management Course or Equivalent
  • Level 1 First Aid Course
  • Basic Fall Protection Course
  • Bucket Truck Operation Course
  • Project Management experience

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
