The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for: leading programs that maintain and enhance the quality of the Province’s water, land and air; maintaining the relative abundance and biodiversity of the Province’s ecological systems inside and outside of protected areas; managing the Province’s parks and recreation program delivery.

Parks and Protected Areas (PPA) Regional Operations is the delivery arm for BC Parks, including all frontcountry and backcountry recreation services and is the primary interface with First Nations, parks facility operators and stakeholders. Regional Operations staff work collaboratively with Provincial Services Branch located in Victoria, as well as with the Ministry’s Environmental Protection Division, Environmental Sustainability Division, Conservation and Recreation Division, and the Ministry of Forests and Ministry of Water, Land and Natural Resources to effectively deliver on government’s environmental, economic and social goals and objectives.

The key function of the Conservation Specialist is to develop, coordinate and provide expert advice and guidance for ecosystem conservation, restoration and management in parks and protected areas. Conservation Specialists support their respective regions in identifying key conservation management actions for Annual Management Plans, and providing input, information and expertise to support the Parks and Protected Areas section and into management planning processes led by regional planners. The positions liaise with stakeholders, volunteers, contractors or other parties doing direct management or projects in parks and protected areas.

Job Requirements:

  • University degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments
  • Registered (or eligible) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
    Note: to meet the ‘within 6 months of employment’ requirement, both education and experience requirements of the CAB must be attained at time of application and may be requested by the hiring panel.   • Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence (or ability to immediately obtain/transfer from another Canadian jurisdiction).
  • Experience conducting stakeholder engagements and/or First Nations consultations related to conservation initiatives
  • Experience developing, analyzing and coordinating ecosystem restoration initiatives.

Preference may be given to applicants with 2 or more years of experience in any of the following:

  • Experience in conducting environmental monitoring and assessments.
  • Experience conducting stakeholder engagements and/or First Nations consultations related to conservation initiatives.
  • Experience developing, analyzing and coordinating ecosystem restoration initiatives.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
